Charles Tindlely was born in Maryland in 1851. Although his father was a slave, his mother was free and so was he. His mother dies when he was young and he was raised by an aunt. They were very poor and Charles had a hard life. As an adult, Charles was drawn to the church and became a minister. He also loved writing hymns. He wrote many of the songs that we are still singing.
