I got to work with 6th graders on Tuesday. It wasn't on a research assignment as I usually do. This was for their reading projects. This is a great group of kids. They come to the library every Monday to pick out books, read magazine, and just to be in the library. We don't have "library time" in our school but these kids and their teacher have decided that they want to have a regular time. This week we had no school on Monday so they missed their time. But on Tuesday, I went to them with lots of ideas about projects they can do for their grade. We looked at PhotoStory, VoiceThread, Animoto, videos, podcasts, vodcasts and even our old reliable PowerPoint. There was so much energy and enthusiasm in the room. The kids signed up for lots of projects and I'm looking forward to working with them during the rest of the year.

Who have guessed? I took the blog readability test and I guess I must use some big words because it came out:
Does that mean I use a whole bunch of fancy words? Well, golly whompers!

I’m not really sure if I will use this in booktalking, but VozMe beta is a lot of fun. This is a tool that converts text into audio. Just drop in some text, click a button and, viola, you have an mp3 file. The voice is rather robotic so it may be fun to use for booktalks about robot books.
I've used VozMe to convert my booktalk for Robot Santa

I'm also working on a pathfinder for one of the teachers at school. The lesson is on cryptids and other mysteries. It's been a lot of fun tracking down websites about the Jersey devil and other assorted beasties. I can't wait to see what the kids do for their projects. They have a menu to choose from and having seen some of these kids in action, I am sure it will be great.
The tech ed teacher and I just had the kids doing wikis. It was one of those unfortunate scheduling problems that I had to supervise a study hall during the class so couldn't work with the kids. The teacher gave them the assignment the day before the lesson was to begin. He told them what the pages would be and gave them the rubric. He had expected to start lessons the next day. But, several of the kids went home after they were told about the assignment and created their own wikis without instruction. And they in turn taught mini-lessons to the other kids. This is what it's all about folks. These kids were so enthusiastic about the project that the teacher repeated it with his other classes. If we do it again with an academic class, there needs to be a bit more structure but the tech ed class was dealing more with the technology.
The 8th grade general music classes created their decades radio shows during October. Some were so good that we have decided to post them on our school podcast. I'm just waiting for the files to be digitized and away we go.
I just love all the excitement over the web 2.0 applications. It harkens back to 1995 when we first introduced the kids to the Internet, Powerpoint, Word and other computer technology that was so new to them. It's great to feel charged up again.!

Own a piece of art from your favorite children's book illustrator while helping to fight cancer. Participate in Robert's Snow: for Cancer's Cure, a unique fundraiser for cancer research. Since 2004, this online auction has raised over $200,000 for Dana-Farber, and with your help, we can continue this holiday tradition in 2007.
"Robert's Snow" is a children's story about a mouse not allowed in the snow. Children's book illustrator Grace Lin wrote the book, which was inspired by her husband Robert's battle with Ewing's sarcoma. After the book was published, Grace gathered artists from all over the children's book illustrating community to create special snowflakes to be auctioned off, with the proceeds benefiting sarcoma research at Dana-Farber. These snowflake auctions became known as the event "Robert's Snow."

Yesterday, I had the great fortune of attending the NESCBWI Encore workshop. These were repeat workshops that had been presented at the spring conference but there was so much going on, I didn't get to these. I was thrilled when I got the message about the repeats. Mark Peter Hughes, John Bell and Sue Burgess presented at the Encore Workshop in Salem, NH
And what a day it was I went away inspired and feeling energized. I grabbed my little tape recorder and dictated all the way home!! Thanks especially to John who listened to my little germ of an idea and helped me flesh it out. John, I think I got those holes filled in on the way home. Now it's off to the computer to get it all down.

I just returned from the Iowa Library Conference. What a great conference! I'm sorry that I couldn't attend the whole thing. I heard it was quite something. And very well attended -- over 950 attendees. What a success!
I arrived late Thursday so missed the live band and the dancing. But I had the pleasure of riding in from the airport with Steve Abrams. He is always so fascinating to listen to. He was key note on Friday as well. I have heard him speak before, but he always gets me thinking about what I am doing and why I am doing it. I came away with some new ideas as always.
I spoke at two consecutive break out sessions so didn't get to hear any other speakers. The luncheon speaker was Jeffrey Kluger who spoke about his new book "Splendid Solution". Fascinating.
The ride back to the airport was highlighted by Loriene Roy, President of ALA, sharing her "Male Librarians of Texas" calendar with me. What a great idea for a fund raiser. And those guys are really good sports!
Thanks to the Iowa Library Association for the invitation and thanks to all the wonderful librarians I had the chance to meet. It was a great time.

I have loaded the October update of Bootalks Quick and Simple. No, your eyes don't deceive you. There was no September update. I have been so busy, I have had no time to read very much let alone update the website. I have finally finished my BER handbook and put together the finishing touches of some new workshops I'm doing this fall. I've also finished writing the booktalking course for YALSA. I got it uploaded just in time for the course to begin on Monday. I still have to get back to work on the new book but I'm feeling a bit less pressure right now. I am speaking at the Iowa conference this Friday but then I have no more workshops to do until December.
But things outside of library land have continued to go crazy. Yesterday, a tree fell on my son's new car. He had totaled his car last month and we just got a new to him replacement. It now has no back window. I have complained to the city about this tree and they even came out to look at it last week but said it didn't need to come down. In the past year, one branch fell into the road, another fell into our driveway -- fortunately no cars were there. But we weren't so lucky yesterday. I have no idea what will happen. It is a city tree so hopefully they will pay for the window. It just missed a man walking his dog.
Well, so much for my long weekend of doing nothing but catching up on my reading.

Today we spend our last day in Denver and head home to New Hampshire. We arrived on Thursday night very late. We drove up to Fort Collins and checked into the hotel and fell into bed. Between the time change and the fact that we had been traveling for so long, we were exhausted.
Friday I spent in Cheyenne, Wyoming at the Wyoming Library Conference. What a great bunch of people. My afternoon program was shortened due to the luncheon program going over. But if you had the chance to hear Will Hobbs, you wouldn't complain about it running long either. I did feel a bit badly for those who attended my programs. I had to shorten both of them to get them into the time left. But I hope it went ok.
My son spent Friday at Colorado State University. He's thinking of transferring there. He took the tour and spent the day on campus while I was at the conference. He was very impressed.
We spent Friday night and Saturday morning in Fort Collins before climbing back into the rental to head to Denver.
Oh yea, they didn't have the small car I had requested so I am driving a huge van. I have never driven a huge van. I do not like driving a huge van. Nor do I like driving in cities. But, I decided that I had to be the grown-up and drive in Denver I did. We spent yesterday exploring the city as much as we could in the time we had. This morning we are heading off to the zoo. I was surprised when my big college age son asked if we could go. I certainly and not saying no.
We'll spend the morning at the zoo and then head off to find the car rental place to get rid of this van. I'll be happy to get into my little Hyundai again. And then it's off to the airport for a flight to Chicago. A two and a half hour layover in Chicago and then home to New Hampshire. We should be home by 12:30 am and hope to get a few hours of sleep before school tomorrow.
I have been loading podcasts while I'm in Colorado. I can't believe there was a time when you couldn't get access while on the road. Thank goodness things have changed.

I'm back to podcasting again. And I think I've turned the corner on this whole bizarre medical mess. Although I did wake up in the middle of the night with my broken toes throbbing. I think the cats were responsible but I can't prove anything!
I've uploaded a week's worth of podcasts and now am back up to date. I've been podcasting older titles because I just haven't been doing a lot of reading lately. Too many projects going on.
So here is a list of new podcasts:

OK, you may be wondering why there have been no podcasts for the past few days. Of course, there may be no one reading this and there may be no one missing the podcasts. But I decided to chronicle my life during the past week so I'll long remember how lucky I usually am.
Friday dawned bright with the promise of a gorgeous day. I was looking forward to the four day weekend after getting through the first few days of school. I had a few projects I needed to finish up but I could take the laptop out to the back yard and enjoy the last of the summer days. Until that old familiar pain started. A migraine. OK, I get them -- no big deal. I just pop some OTC meds and take a nap and then I'm fine. Not so, I got through Friday and Saturday with just semi-mild pain. By Sunday night, I knew I needed to get some prescription meds this time. But being the stubborn kind that I am when it comes to medical care, I decided to go to bed and see what Monday brought. Well, by Monday morning I could barely walk. I was falling down and running into walls. I woke my son up and asked him to take me to the ER. It wasn't really crowded so I go in within 10 minutes. This is going to be a piece of cake. It took the doctor just a few minutes to stop into my cubicle and we started to have a nice chat. Unfortunately, he had the wrong chart but he almost had me convinced that I had just been discharged a week ago. When he returned with my chart, I told him I was having an awful migraine and needed some fiorinal. Instead, he had the nurse give me an IV with Dilaudin. Really great stuff. I now had four identical doctors trying to get information from me. But I still had the headache. Now, I'll blame my lack of remembering the next few hours on the dilaudin. I vaguely remember going for a cat scan. I vaguely remember the chest xray. I do remember the technician telling me I couldn't hang on to the machine so tightly. When I let go, I fell down so she let me hold on. Hmmm dilaudin. I do remember getting very cold. I think it was the vent above the bed but they wouldn't give me those nice heated blankets. Now my son swears I had them on but I think he's fooling me. I don't remember much more after that. Apparently they did a lumbar puncture that I screamed through. Boy I hope there were no kids around. After about 7 hours, I was told I had a migraine, given a prescription for fiorinal and sent home. The doctor also said I had a respiratory infection so take some cipro also. They gave me another dose of dilaudin before I was discharged. My son needed a wheel chair to get me to the car.
At home, the family suggested I just go to bed but I said I was fine and decided to eat a banana since I hadn't eaten anything for two days. So I settled down in the recliner with my banana and put on the Red Sox game. Picture a passed out woman with a half eaten banana in her mouth. Or maybe you shouldn't. The kids let me sleep for awhile and when I finally woke up, I went upstairs to bed. I set the alarm because I was sure I'd be fine in the morning.
Tuesday morning. The radio goes off. Hey, the migraine is gone. Great! Jump out of bed. At this point, the Jolly Green Giant grabs the back of my head and squeezes as hard as he can. I double over in pain. Well, I'm not giving in to pain. So I get up again. But good old Jolly is squeezing my brain so hard I can't see. I find that if I don't put my head up, I can walk so I go get a cup of coffee and the morning paper. I try sitting in my chair but it hurts. Maybe I'll just give the morning dose of fiorinal a chance to kick in. So upstairs I go. But, I lose my balance and spill coffee all over my bed and myself. Too smooth. What's a woman to do? I lie on the floor wishing the pain away. I tell the kids I won't be going to work today. No, no, don't worry about me. I'll just lie here til the meds kick in.
After two hours on the floor, I decide I need to call my doctor. I crawl over to the phone. I get the answering service. Sure they'll call me back as soon as a nurse is available. I'm noticing things about the floor I've never noticed before. And the animals think I want to play with them. Well, one cat curls up with me and falls asleep. When I finally talk to the nurse, I'm told that I have the classic post lumbar puncture headache and that I need to go the ER for treatment, AARGH! I call my son. I know his college class is over and he's at the bookstore, the library or just hanging out. He comes home to spend another day with good old mom in the ER. I do remind him of the hours I've spent there with him and the fact that I am paying for his college. But, kidding aside, he is great.
This time the ER is packed. And ambulances are coming in from every town in the state -- and perhaps all the adjoining states. And Canada. Now mind you, I can't stand up straight. I am hunched over and can't look at the nurses. I do notice that the cleaning crew doesn't do a great job with cleaning under the seats. So here I sit for several hours. I am hunched over and can't sit up. At one point I try throwing a magazine on the floor and reading from that angle. I can't concentrate long enough to find out why Jamie Lynn Curtis is talking about her kids. Fortunately, my son has his college books and homework.
After a couple of hours, I am finally led back into the same cubicle that I had occupied all day before. But no dilaudin this time, darn it. We waited a long time but at least I could lie down and suffered very little pain. When the doctor arrived, I told him my sad story and he told me a few people experience this. Gee I'm lucky. I like being unique but this time is not one of them. There is a fix but it needs to be done by an anesthesiologist. He'll call one. OK, if you've read this far, you'll know that it took a long time for the doctor to arrive. He talked to me and said he wanted a second opinion. He said the fix was risky and they only did it on extreme cases. And since I was joking with him, I obviously was not in that much pain. OK, now I joked all the way through foot surgery so I don't think that is any indication. I was also told that I joked through another surgery when I was under general. Of course, no one ever said I was funny but... So I promised I'd cry instead if he would make the pain go away. Of course, he took that as a joke. So we need to wait for another doctor to come in.
Third doctor said he won't do the procedure because of the respiratory infection. Just go home, drink plenty of coffee and water (huh?) and stay in bed. Now not to be to indelicate, but have you ever drunk tons of coffee and then were able just to stay in bed? Anyway, he said I'd be fine in 2-10 days. What?? 10 days? Is he nuts? The school year has just begun. I've just missed my first college class of the semester. Way to impress the students.
So here I sit -- actually lay -- using my voice dictation software to try to put sentences together. Trust me, it's hard. I am having trouble focusing for more than a few minutes at a time. So I haven't been able to read or listen to books or work on projects or stay conscious for long. And every time I get up, good old Jolly is right there to squeeze my brain for me. The doctor said one day I'll just wake up and the pain will be gone. Maybe tomorrow. I know I shouldn't complain too much. There are so many people worse off than I am.
Now, one final comment (I promise). I went downstairs a little while ago to see my grandsons before they went to bed. Even though I can only look down, I lost my balance and tripped over a cord on the floor. I think my foot is broken. No, I'm not going to the ER. I'm icing it tonight and we'll see how it feels tomorrow. So now I can only walk bent over, can't keep my balance, and am limping.
So, now you know why there have been no podcasts. Maybe tomorrow I'll trying recording but it will definitely be from a prone position.

But this is not getting my work done. Finishing up a magazine article and then have to prepare for the first computer class on Tuesday. I'm teaching a new program from a new textbook. As summer comes to an end, I am trying to podcast booktalks about older books that are too good to miss. I have been so busy with other projects this summer that I really haven't had much time to read as many new imprints as I normally do during the summer months. We go back to school on Monday so things will get really hectic then. The month of September is shaping up to be all work and no play for the booktalker :-( But I don't mind. At least it will be full of projects that I will enjoy.
Today's podcast is for Scott Westerfeld's Uglies, the first book in a trilogy that has now become a series. The fourth book, The Extras, is coming out in October. Can't wait!!

This is not quite book related but in a way it is. Yesterday morning I took a major step in my life. I had lasik surgery! Now, I know millions of others have done it but I had been on the fence for years. My vision was so bad that I couldn't even see the clock in the morning that was next to the bed. It got to the point that I needed reading glasses over my contact lenses. So, I decided to take the risk. My worst nightmare was that something would go wrong and I wouldn't be able to see to read anymore. But I made the plunge. Yesterday morning at 8:00, I was lying on the table while a laser cut into my eyes. How bizarre is that?? Anyway, yesterday my vision was 20/750. Today it is 20/30. The doctor said it will take a couple of days for my vision to stabilize so he has hopes that the vision will get even better. I have been cleared to drive without glasses!! I couldn't even walk across the street without glasses yesterday.
So, not really book related but it feels so good to be free of glasses for the first time in over 50 years!!
