The package, which mysteriously appears through the mail slot, is addressed to Stanley Buggles…inside is a large, heavy old key, accompanied by a letter. It seems that 11-year-old Stanley has inherited the estate of Candlestick Hall in the village of Crampton Rock. Stanley has never even met his great-uncle, Admiral Bartholomew Swift, who has perished in a “dark encounter with a fearsome werewolf”. As we look in on Stanley, the plucky lad treks the mile-long footbridge to the island alone. Little does he know what adventure lies in store: lurking pirates, a magical talking fish, and a local mystery that has the townsfolk quaking behind closed doors when darkness descends every night! Can it be that our Stanley is destined to be a hero? Read THE WOODEN MILE, the first in a wickedly goofy, marvelously illustrated series by Chris Mould.
