But it is a time of high unemployment and poverty. They call it the Great Depression and there are few jobs around Gary. Deza’s father sets off to find work in Flint, Michigan and soon, Deza, her mother and brother follow hoping to catch up with him. They settle in Hooverville outside of Flint and there the family hopes to see Dad again. As they cling to hope, they must find ways to support themselves. Life is hard but the family lives by their motto “We are a family on a journey to a place called Wonderful.”
