When Summer's Japanese American parents have to return to Japan to take care of family business, Summer and her brother Jaz stay with their grandparents. In order to pay the mortgage, the grandparents take a job with a custom harvesting company. And Summer and Jaz are working as well. This is just the latest in a series of bad luck events. As a matter of fact, Summer almost died of malaria earlier in the year. Life is hard for migrant workers but when grandfather gets ill, it is up to 12 year old Summer to figure out a way to keep them from losing everything.
