Picture Book Day at Gibson's Bookstore

What a great way to start out my birthday -- Picture Book Day at my favorite bookstore. Gibson's Bookstore hosted 3 authors and an illustrator who shared their work with an enthusiastic group.

Jean Cochran began with reading from two of her books. "Farmer Brown and His Little Red Truck" put us in the mood for more. Illustrator Daryl Enos was on hand to talk to us about illustrating. "If a Monkey Jumps onto Your School Bus" brought lots of giggles from the kids in the audience -- and the adults too.

Next up was author Carol Gordon Ekster. She read her book "Where Am I Sleeping Tonight? A Story of Divorce." The story tells of a young boy who is caught up in the problems that come along with divorce. His teacher is mad at him because he doesn't bring his homework in and seems disorganized. But it is really because he is moving from mom's place to dad's place and he doesn't always know where the homework is. Carol told me later that the story is based on a child she knew.

Nancy Topper Ling shared her book "My Sister, Alicia May". It is the story of a young girl who has a sister with Down's Syndrome. Alicia May is not like all the other little sisters but she is unique in a good way. The story shows what she is good at but also why her sister gets annoyed with her at times. I hope we see some more books about Alicia May.

The morning ended with illustrator Daryl Enos leading the kids in an illustration display. He showed the kids (and adults) how to draw a frog by just using the letter "u". Pretty impressive Daryl.

Thanks Gibson's and all the authors and illustrators for a fun morning.
