Have you ever heard of Robert Goddard? If not, I bet you have seen many of the things he invented. Way back in the 1880s, Robert wasn't able to go to school since he was often sick.  His parents wanted to be sure that he got a good education so they taught him at home. They gave him lots of scientific items and even bought him a subscription to the magazine Scientific American. He read every issue and did his own experiments.  When he learned about diamonds, he tried to make diamonds from pencil graphite and flame.  He didn't make diamonds but it lead to a many years of research.
